Ой у лузі червона калина
Description
When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 and tried to take Kyiv, an old folk song from 1914 found new life. "Ой у лузі червона калина" (Oh, the Red Viburnum in the Meadow) became an anthem of resistance. The song uses the red viburnum berry - калина (kalyna) in Ukrainian - as a metaphor for Ukraine's spirit. Like the berry bush that bends but doesn't break, it speaks to the Ukrainian people's unwavering hope and resilience in the darkest times. Whenever I hear it sung now, whether in protests or shared on social media, it gives me chills. The words written over a century ago feel just as powerful and relevant today as Ukrainians continue fighting for their freedom.
